Chapter Six

The screen was coming on by the time that he climbed into the driver’s seat, but he didn't pause to look at it until they were out of the mall and heading away from where he could still see a handful of police vehicles hanging around.

"I'd just love to see the spin they put on the story," Kris whispered. "Maybe they’ll put it down as gangland violence or something. Criminals dressed as mall Santas shoot up mall is the kind of headline that writes itself."

Not that he was going to hang around long enough for it to be published. The screen showed the trace he'd put on the computer. It had been hours, and the trace had long since been completed, showing him a building in Manhattan.

"Been a while since I've visited good old NYC," he said, looking around the car. "You know, it wouldn't kill you to put a word in here or there. People are going to think the old dumbass with the white beard is fucking nuts."

There was no answer from the Workshop, but his phone did buzz in his pocket, indicating an alert coming through on the car's Bluetooth connection.

Tickets had been bought to take him to JFK in less than three hours, along with a ticket for him to collect yet another vehicle waiting for him once he got there. He assumed it was going to be another nondescript vehicle that allowed him to drive around the area with no issues about being seen.

If he was equipped again as he had been in Miami, he was going to need to find a way to get a present for the Workshop. It was supporting him better than he had ever been supported in the past. Of course, he’d had no problem supporting himself—living and surviving on his wits.

But having the Workshop there to sustain him in the field was definitely a plus. The Workshop’s support was going to bring up a few questions about what was happening around him, but those would all have to wait until he had the sleigh back.

Delivering the car back to the rental agency felt wrong, considering how much he wanted to keep it, but driving all the way to New York would waste too much time. Hopefully the one he got his hands on in the city that never slept would be just as good.

It was quick work to check in again since he had no luggage, meaning he had a little while to get something to eat before boarding.

The truest sign that he was starting to get old presented itself when Kris found himself napping during the two and change hours he spent on the plane. He needed to be nudged by the stewardess to tell him they had landed.

There was no reason for him to feel better about being in New York than in Miami. The place was a hell of a lot more hectic, and the airport was packed with people since the holiday was coming up.
